When I got my first domain, albinogiraffe.com, I didn’t really have a clue what domains were, or what I was even going to use one for. But I found it for cheap and I kinda expected it to act as sort of my default page. Basically tell people ‘hey go here, all my links are there’. That’s pretty much how it’s been until recently, until I started using Squarespace to host a sort of portfolio for my photography, because I felt my work would look better on there than on Instagram. The only downside is it is EXPENSIVE. So I cancelled that and switched to WordPress. I could have gone self-hosted everything but I wanted something up now, and this is the result.
Now back to the domain nonsense. I bought my first domain for cheap at Google Domains about a year ago now, and it’s been great! Google as a registrar was simple and easy to navigate, and synced with my other Google stuff well. Fast forward to now, not even a year later and BOOM, Google sold their domain business to SQUARESPACE. The deal supposedly happened in June 2023, but I didn’t find out until a few days ago through Reddit. Given how expensive Squarespace is, I pretty much gave up on any hopes for keeping my cheap domain with Squarespace. I’ve since transferred the domain to Cloudflare and it’s been a huge upgrade! I’ve bought another cheap domain (This one!) and set up email with iCloud’s custom email domain. Setup for WordPress was also pretty easy on Cloudflare and I hope to play around with the loads of new tools IO have at my disposal with Clooudflare. Yay!
